About the wine
Scott planted this vineyard and cared for it for 17 years before making his own wine from it!
Scott McLeod, your Angel-funded winemaker, says:
- "I planted the vineyard in 1998 to Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a tiny 2.5 acre piece. Sonoma Valley doesn't have large, contiguous Cabernet vineyards like you have in Alexander Valley. Instead, most of the great Cabernet here is from small, specific vineyards like this one. I face south and easterly, getting great morning sun and sheltered from the winds that come thru the Bennett Valley Gap in the afternoon."
- "Angel funding lets me bring these grapes in last each year as Sonoma takes longer to ripen than Napa. Also, it takes longer to 'burn off' the green flavors associated with unripe Cabernet. We also use Angel funding to do extra work in the vines to increase light penetration into the interior of the canopy and help flavors progress from green to red, red to blue, and blue to black."
- "The color of this wine is immediately pleasurable for its density and saturation. Aromas of dark berries, mocha, lavender follow by a great 'attack' of expansive texture and opulence. Flavors are true to the variety, blue berries, dark bramble, followed by a lasting finish."
Best before
It is a big Cabernet from a big vintage. This wine will be around for a decade or more. If you like brash, big Cabernet, drink young. But with age will come complexity.
Serving advice
Scott says he would personally wait until 2016 before opening. Decanting is a must for a big Cabernet from a big vintage.
Food match
Power on power. So grilled meats, vegetables, mushrooms. Think savory, think hearty. Grilled lamb would be my number one choice.
