12312023 WTW Wine 4 - It's WTW (Wine Tasting Weekend) - the New Years Eve BONUS edition! I already tasted my 3 new wines (all the Amador 2021 releases from Ana Diogo-Draper), but it's New Year's Eve, so I HAVE to open a bottle of bubbles. So, I didn't have any NEW bubbles to taste (placed an order before writing this to correct that), so I have pulled another bottle from the cellar. It's a revisit of Wayne's 2020 Blanc de Blancs (3rd and last bottle), one of my 5 heart faves. What can I say - not a whole lot has changed in the 2 plus weeks since my last bottle. It's still crisp and flavorful, and zingy with the bubbles, so perfect for New Years Eve! Still a solid 5 hearts as evidenced by it's multiple awards! I brought a bottle of these bubbles to a Christmas Party with a couple other Nakedwines.com wines, and this was the celebratory hit (as in who doesn't like to celebrate with some bubbles, eh?). Thanks for your contribution to a special evening! Still 5 hearts! Original Bottle: WTW Day 1 - It's WTW (Wine Tasting Weekend) - the Pre-Holiday Weekend Edition. Can't believe it, but next weekend is another Holiday weekend already, so only 4 days of work and then 4 days off - Woot Woot! So, we celebrate early as I will be busy next weekend! As always, I have 3, count'em THREE, wines I'll be tasting each day of the weekend (one per day). I have selected the following wines to taste: 2020 W. Donaldson Sonoma Blanc de Blancs, 2021 F. Stephen Millier Legend Series Santa Barbara Pinot Noir, and ending with the 2020 Benjamin Darnault Minervois. Of course, this pre-holiday celebration calls for starting with some bubbles, and we will be, with Wayne's signature Blanc de Blancs! The wine in the glass is a medium gold in color - with fine bubbles. Sniffy sniff time – Hints of apple fruit, warm toast, and some citrus fruit notes appear on the nose. Tasty Taste time – Crisp bubbles and acidity greets the palate with flavors of Apple and Pear fruit, limestone, and chalkdust, and a hint of Quince. Very dry and refreshing! Wayne's bubbles never fail to please my palate, and my faves are this one and the Rose for his W. Donaldson label. And, what do you know - Wayne and I are celebrating our 35th anniversary with this wine, as it's my 35th unique wine of Wayne's to enjoy! Huzzah! I've enjoyed Wayne's original NV releases, and then have managed to score at least one bottle of each of his vintages of this classic from 2014 to 2020 - a first as I usually miss something in the middle there. All have scored 4.5-5 hearts historically, so where does this one rate? A comfortable 5 hearts, baby!

Matt Parish Alexander Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2023

08182024 Until I get my next case, I'm going to have to switch away from my WTW as I have almost caught up on all my new wine reviews, so switching over to doing a wine a week for a bit. Back with another Matt Parish wine - but this time it's his Inaugural Sauvignon Blanc from Alexander Valley. While SBs aren't my fave varietal, my Peeps know I still try them (especially if Matt is going to make one for us) and see what I think. I have enjoyed quite a few (just not as much as Napa Cabs and other Reds or Sparklers - yep, I roll with both those extremes). Let's go! In the glass, the wine is a medium yellow to gold in color. Sniffy Sniff time – the nose of this SB is showing nice citrus fruit notes, with hints of honeysuckle, and some grassiness. Tasty Taste time – moving onto the palate, the citrus fruit continues with grapefruit, lemon curd, wet stone, and hints of gooseberry. Very crisp acidity with a zingy texture and a zesty finish! Huzzah! Matt always makes great wines for my palate, and while this is not one of his reds (and recall, I don't typically go for a Sauvignon Blanc) this one is pleasing to my palate. Not as much as his reds, truth be told, but it's very crisp and refreshing to sip. I'm enjoying it, and if you enjoy fresh and crisp white wines, you can't go wrong with this one. Glad I tried it out for the experience! Now, if I can just convince Matt to make us a Sparkler, or Port wine, that would complete me. 4.5 hearts (which is high marks for an SB from me, mind you - hah!). Sweetie Peeps beware as this one is quite dry, so won't be to your liking me thinks...others, grab some for your next case to see what you think! Scott Kelley Southern Oregon Malbec 2021

10252024 Ok, Peeps - I'm upping my WTW to 2 wines a week as I have a bit more of a stash of new wines built in the cellar now. The wines I have chosen for this week are the following: Matt Parish 2022 "The 24" Contra Costa Zinfandel, and Scott Kelley 2021 Southern Oregon Malbec. Both winemakers are a couple faves of mine, and now its time for Scott's Malbec, and another anniversary! He has released a vintage of this wine in 2020 as well, and I really enjoyed it, so let's see how the 2021 stacks up! In the glass, the wine is a medium to deep purple in color and has a decently inky heart as I can barely see my fingers through the glass. Sniffy Sniff time – taking a sniffy sniff of this Malbec shows bramble berries, hints of cocoa, cedarwood, and a touch of smokiness. Tasty Taste time – as I splash a tasty taste of this wine across the palate, the fruit resolves into blackberry, some black cherry (much lighter) fruit, notes of leather and forest floor, and a bit of graphite, with generous oak. Medium tannins and acidity with a smooth texture and a rustic finish. Yum! Happy 15th Anniversary, Scott! It's the 15th unique wine of yours I have tasted since you joined Nakedwines.com! While I maybe should have planned better and opened one of your signature Pinot Noirs (love love love) vs. the Malbec, this release is on par with the 2020 IMHO and a celebratory experience in its own right. Hence, I really enjoyed this vintage as well! This one definitely benefits from some breathing room to open up, and once it does, it shows itself! Now, I just need to cook a medium steak to enjoy with this bad boy and all will be right with the world. 4.5 hearts! Matt Parish "The 24" Contra Costa Zinfandel 2022

10242024 Ok, Peeps - I'm upping my WTW to 2 wines a week as I have a bit more of a stash of new wines built in the cellar now. The wines I have chosen for this week are the following: Matt Parish 2022 "The 24" Contra Costa Zinfandel, and Scott Kelley 2021 Southern Oregon Malbec. Both winemakers are a couple faves of mine, but we'll begin with Matt's Zin as it's a bit lighter red than the big Malbec Scott released. Matt always makes great wines, as my Peeps know, and I have enjoyed many past vintages of this Zin - but, let's see how the 2022 tastes. In the glass, the wine is a medium ruby to purple in color with no inkiness to its heart (fingers are easily seen through the glass). Sniffy Sniff time – the nose of this wine is showing nice blackberry fruit, some spicy notes, with tobacco leaf, and oak. Tasty Taste time – onto the palate we go, and the blackberry fruit is there with added strawberry preserves, hints of cinnamon and sweet tobacco, and rich oak. Medium plus tannins, and medium acidity with a sultry texture and a flavorful finish! Excellent! My Peeps know the drill - Matt's 24 Zin is super! Could it not be? Doubtful, although, I do have a rare time where I found another recent Zin I tasted to be better, but it was ~$40 (M.A.D. Dashe Single Vineyard Reserve Alexander Valley Zin). WHAT? Yep, but then given Matt's is less than half the cost of that, I would buy a couple bottles of this and cellar away as it's really great! This is a screaming deal at $16 a bottle - QPR is off the charts! So, 'nuff said. Where do I land on this today? 4.5 hearts. No worries, as with more cellar time we will see an easy 5 hearts here too... 06292024 WTW Wine 2 - It's WTW (Wine Tasting Weekend or Weekday depending on when I post - hah!) - As always, I have 3, count'em THREE, wines I'll be tasting each day (one per day, unless I get antsy or late). I have selected the following wines to taste: Scott Steingraber 2022 Building Bridges Rogue Valley Viognier, Mick Schroeter 2021 California Sparkling Shiraz, and Karen Birmingham 2021 Single Vineyard Clements Hills Cabernet Sauvignon. Moving onto my 2nd wine of the weekend, and a first for me, a sparkling red wine - yep, tasting Mick's Sparkling Shiraz. This will be different for me as I'm used to white and rose sparklers, but excited to try it out! Let's go! In the glass, the wine is a medium purple in color. Sniffy Sniff time – smoky bramblefuit greets the nose, with charred blackberry fruit (like from the barbie?). Tasty Taste time – greeted by fine bubbles, blackberry fruit with some tobacco leaf, and a touch of dark cocoa on the palate. Tannins are medium to high (bordering on chewy at times), with medium acidity and a slight note of bitters on the finish. Wow - this is so different for me. Reds I'm used to allowing to breathe and open up, but this sparkler I wasn't sure if that was smart given the bubbles could eventually dissipate. Would love it if Mick posted a detailed explaination on how he crafted this red sparkler for those that are interested. Not sure if this will work for everyone, but for me, I am finding that I DIG this, ya know? Sparklers + Reds = best of 2 worlds for me, so I was hoping I would like it. However, your mileage could vary. I would tell all my Peeps to give this a try (well, maybe not my Sweetie Peeps?), as this is so unique to try and see what you think. So, where did I net out? I prefer bone dry white or rose sparklers to this, but I really, really enjoy this sparkler! I'll be grabbing some more for the cellar to see how it ages as well. Please keep producing this so we can try future vintages! 4.5 hearts! The Strasser Collection Central Coast Gruner Veltliner 2023

09062024 Continuing with my WTW switch to doing a wine a week, Peeps, I grabbed the latest vintage (2023) of Rudy Von Strasser's, The Strasser Collection Central Coast Gruner Veltliner. I enjoyed the 2021 quite a bit, even though I love his Cabs more (I'm more of a red head, remember). Let's see how this latest vintage tastes! In the glass, the wine is a pale to medium gold in color. Sniffy Sniff time – a sniffy sniff of this GruVee shows primarily citrus fruit notes, such as lime, and grapefruit, with some slight herbaceousness. Tasty Taste time – swirling some onto the palate for my tasty taste yields gooseberry fruit, notes of star fruit, crushed rock, and hints of pink peppercorn. High acidity, a viscous texture, and some steely bite on the finish round things out. Delightful! Rudy delivers a very nice GruVee yet again with this vintage, Peeps. While fruity, I wouldn't say its sweet enough for the Sweetie Peeps out there, but your mileage may vary, so give it a try if you are adventurous! This is on par with the last vintage for me, and gets 4.5 hearts! If you have never tried a Gruner Veltliner, make sure to grab some to see what you think and expand that palate! The wines I have chosen for this week are the following: Chris Baker 2023 Willamette Valley Pinot Blanc, and Scott Peterson 2022 ROX of the Andes Argentina Cabernet Sauvignon. Time to move onto one of my fave winemakers, and Scotty P, with his ROX Andes Cab, which I have enjoyed all the prior vintages of so far, but let's see if the 2022 vintage holds up to those, eh? Let's begin! In the glass, the wine is a medium to deep ruby in color and has a decided inkiness to its heart. Sniffy Sniff time – the nose of this cab shows cherry and blackberry fruit, with cedarwood, and hints of smoke. Tasty Taste time – moving onto the palate, the blackberry and black cherry fruit is present with hints of toasty oak, and pencil lead. Medium tannins with medium plus acidity, smooth texture, with a touch of tartness on the finish. Yummy! It's time for another anniversary, Peeps! Scotty P's wines have hit the 55th anniversary with my palate having now tasted 55 unique wines of his over the years. What do I think of this 3rd vintage of his ROX of the Andes Cab? To quote Tony the Tiger, It's GRRRRREEEEEEAAAATTTT! I think it could do with a bit more cellar time atm, but otherwise will be a solid 5 hearts with some more rest. For now, it's 4.5 hearts! 08222024 Continuing with my WTW switch to doing a wine a week, Peeps, I'm back with a new release of bubbles from Wayne Donaldson. I'm tasting his latest vintage (2021) of his W. Donaldson Sonoma Rose! I have always enjoyed both his signature Rose and his Blanc de Blancs, and have a hard time placing one above the other. Historically, I believe I have had some vintages of one beat the other by a half a heart, but they go back and forth for me. Well, let's see how this vintage tastes! In the glass, the wine is a medium copper in color. Sniffy Sniff time – on the nose of this sparkler, I'm sensing some floral notes, raspberry fruit, and hints of citrus. Tasty Taste time – the palate highlights the raspberry fruit with the addition of strawberry fruit, and hints of chalkdust (look out for the flying erasers, Peeps - Ha!). Bubbles are very delicate and fine - effervescent as always! Uber crisp acidity, and a flavorful finish! Superb! If you haven't tried a Donaldson sparkler yet, Peeps, you owe it to yourself to grab one of them. W. Donaldson label is my fave of them, albeit a bit pricier than the Eponina, I find it to always be superior, and worth the extra investment. I have enjoyed the prior 6 vintages of this Sonoma Rose, so not surprisingly, I am enjoying this 2021 as well. Always a hit with my palate. Grab some while you can as it will sell out. 5 hearts! Montse Reece Dry Creek Zinfandel 2020

09182024 Continuing with my WTW change of doing a wine a week, Peeps, I decided to grab a Zinfandel from the cellar - I thought it would go quite well with our BBQ ribs meal being smoked today, and it did (spoiler)...so today, we have Montse Reece's 2020 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel - I love her cab and red blend, but had not been able to get the Zin in my state until the 2020 release, so am really excited to be able to try her Zin! Let's see how it tastes! In the glass, the wine is a deep ruby to garnet in color. Sniffy Sniff time – a sniffy sniff of this Zin shows jamminess in the fruits, with blackberry and black plum fruit, sweet tobacco leaf, some spice and a nice amount of toasty oak. Tasty Taste time – swirling some of this Zin on the palate shows that the fruits sensed on the nose have carried over with blackberry jam, plum fruit, some bramblewood, touch of cinnamon spice, and oak. Medium plus tannins with medium acidity, a velvety texture and a fruit filled finish. Savory! Montse's Zin is another one of those Zins that I find exceptional, and maybe it's a bit pricier than I'm used to for a Zin, but then another recent even pricier Zin I tasted was amazing, so, it just goes to show you that a varietal in which you procure high end fruit, with a talented creator like Montse, leads to a stellar example of that varietal! I'm so glad they finally can ship this to my state now, and hoping that will continue into the future! Decanting is a must to allow this to open up. While the alcohol may seem a bit high at 15.8% vs. some others, I've also had a few other Zins that broached upper 16's, but this one is well integrated so that you don't notice it, and that's what counts to me! Matt Parish Contra Costa Rose of Carignan & Mourvedre 2022

08272024 Continuing with my WTW switch to doing a wine a week, Peeps, I grabbed another Matt Parish wine (yep, I have a lot of those in the cellar). This time its another of his Roses - the 2022 Contra Costa Rose of Carignan & Mourvedre. All of them are very nice. So, let's see how the 2022 tastes! In the glass, the wine is a pale to medium copper in color. Sniffy Sniff time – the nose of this rose shows strawberry fruit, with citrus fruit notes as well. Tasty Taste time – moving onto the palate maintains some of the strawberry fruit, with the addition of peach, and hints of bergamot. Medium plus acidity, with a somewhat creamy texture finishing with a touch of bitters. Refreshing! I have tasted all four vintages now from 2019-2022, and noted that these have all been quite consistent for me (at 4.5 hearts). Matt releases a few different roses, 2 Pinot Noir Roses, and this Carigana/Mourvedre combo. I tend to like the Anderson Valley PN Rose a bit more than the Sonoma Rose, which usually compares as favorably as the C/M Rose. It does appear to be maintaining its consistency as this one gets another 4.5 hearts from me. Nice everyday sipper, so grab some, chill it, and enjoy!
