About the wine
Stunning red from teeny-tiny producer of handcrafted Portuguese wines
- The banks of the Douro river are famous for making Port wine, but not everybody knows how deeply delicious the ripe, juicy unfortified reds are in this region.
- Angels gave Mario the resources he needs to make stunning wines from traditional Portuguese grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Barroca and Roriz).
- The grapes were hand-harvested and transported to the winery in small boxes to avoid crushing the grapes under their own weight before a refrigerated ride back to the winery. Mario shows the grapes every possible tenderness, going so far as foot-stomping the grapes because it's more delicate than machine pressing! And then of course some lavish oak aging to round out the wines with a spicy vanilla finish – YUM!

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Mario Negreiros
Years Angel-funded: 2015-17
- Mario's 'Quinta das Amendoeiras' vineyards were bought by his Grandfather over 70 years ago. All that time, they sold their grapes to be used for Port.
- Mario took over the vineyard management in 2002, and decided to fulfill his father's wishes by turning their family's best grapes into their own wine. Now he runs Negrerios Wine and Quinta das Amendoerias in the Douro - you can visit the winery and stay there, too!
- He was discovered by a few of UK Archangels on their tasting trip through Portugal... and we're really pleased they found us such a talented winemaker to join our ranks!
