This wine took me straight back to my childhood. OK, that sounds wrong. I didn't drink wine as a child. But this wine immediately reminded me of the black cherry vanilla ice cream I loved as a kid. On both the nose and the palate, it tasted like black cherry or black currant with prominent vanilla. It was warm and soft with a luscious almost creamy mouthfeel. After being open for about half an hour, the next glass revealed some pie spice as well. A tremendously enjoyable wine. More please!

Lots going on here, and it's all good. This is big, beautifully-made wine with with layers of flavors. Purple-red color with garnet around the edges. A swirl reveals fine legs and a nose of red fruit and dried herbs. I get plum, tart cherry, mocha, and sage on the palate. Great acidity provides balance. Long, smooth finish. Good backbone of tannin tells me this was built to age and would likely drink well for at least another 5-6 years, maybe more. Definite reorder for me.

Like the previous vintage, Scott's 2013 All Blacks is a big mouthful of jammy and lively fruits with serious backbone. It's balanced and ready to drink now. Wow. I wish I had bought more. Cheers!

Stunning Chardonnay here. Pale straw color in the glass with aromas of pineapple and lemon. Crisp and clean mouthfeel revealing tropical flavors plus pear and banana. Very drinkable, refreshing, and satisfying to the ABC drinker. Oh, if you’re looking for oak, butter, vanilla, move along—this isn’t for you. Cheers!

Richard Bruno Giacone Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

As a pinot noir drinker, this is one of those wines that makes me question why I don’t drink more Cabernet. This wine is big, bold, fruity, spicy, complex, and flat out delicious. It pours deep garnet with purple hues. Good legs in the glass. I absolutely love the nose of this wine—black cherry, toast, and eucalyptus. The mouthfeel is smooth and pleasing with flavors of dark fruits—plum, cassis, and cherry, and chocolate-covered liqueur candies—and . . . banana. Yes, I realize that’s common in Chardonnay but it’s what I’m tasting right now. This Cab has a long, warm finish. Absolutely delicious and an incredible value. Cheers!

Penelope Breathless California Brut Rose NV

This bubbly is top notch and a great value. Lovely fine bubbles and an attractive light salmon in the glass. A nose of melon and lime. Raspberries and more lime on the palate with great acidity and refreshing finish.

Ondine Chattan Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc 2018

This wine is perfect for my current setting—on a beach 3,000 miles off the coast of Portugal with the sea breeze in my face. This Sauvignon Blanc is equally crisp and refreshing. Grapefruit predominates on the nose, with tart citrus, lemongrass, and a hint of honey in the mouth. It is easy drinking and will pair well with any lighter fare as well as be a satisfying quaff on its own. Cheers!

Matt Parish Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

What a tremendous wine—and value—this Napa cab is. Big nose of plum, black cherry, cedar, and spice with similar flavor profile on the palate. Mildly tannic so it drinks well now but will likely mellow and improve over the next 2-3 years. Medium finish with notes of spicy clove. I drank this now for rating purposes so I have a baseline for later.. Currently drinking the last of Matt’s 2014, with 2015 on deck. Matt Parish never disappoints and is one of NW’s true gems.

Ana Diogo-Draper Amador Tempranillo 2016

I was rewarded for holding onto this beautiful bottle, even if it makes me a black sheep among Archangels. 😉 Big and bold in the glass, with ruby red/garnet hue and long fine legs indicative of the 15.5% alcohol. A nose of red licorice, cherry, and strawberry; Silky smooth mouth feel filled with plum, strawberry, clove, and a hint of anise. Long lingering finish with some heat from the alcohol. This is a winner!

F. Stephen Millier Black Label Zinfandel Amador County 2016

Boom! Now this is my kind of zin! It’s translucent deep red color—not purple—belies the depth and power behind this beauty. A swirl reveals dozen of fine legs, which is to be expected with this clocking in at 15.5. It’s got a full nose of strawberry, blackberry, plum, and cedar. On the palate the flavors build and build; red and dark fruits, mocha, clove, white pepper. The finish is long with some heat and sweet. Very intriguing. Drinking beautifully now. Low to medium tannins tell me there’s no reason to wait on this. And experience too—zin is one of my two favorite varietals but most of my experiences aging it show there’s usually not much to be gained and a lot of fruit to be lost.

Matt Parish Cabernet Sauvignon Pilot Hill Gang Reserve El Dorado County 2015

I feel like a baby killer here. This wine has SO much potential and will be phenomenal in a couple to three years. Right now it is big, bold, tightly wound, with a powerful backbone of tannin. This is a wine to lay down for awhile and be rewarded for your patience.

Sin Fronteras Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2015

This is a really well-structured cab that is built to last. It drinks well now--especially given some time to breathe or if run through an aerator--but will definitely benefit from laying down for a couple years. Black cherry, mocha, tar on the nose, a touch of sweaty saddle. Dark, dark fruit on the plate with a touch of raspberry on the back end, making for a pleasing finish. Well integrated tannins and nice balance. Ow despite my feeling that this will age well. Really nice wine.

Sharon Weeks Cattoo Lodi Pinot Noir 2015

This is a lovely, easy-drinking Pinot Noir, and a fantastic value. Garnet colored in the glass. Predominant strawberry, cherry-pie, and violet on the nose, with similar fruit profile in the palate with a nice balance of sweet-tart. Short to medium finish. At this price, run don't walk to fill your cart before it's gone. An excellent wine for the price.

Scott Peterson ROX Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2015

And yet another reason I chose to be an Archangel for Scott Peterson. I love Sonoma Coast for its fabulous Pinot Noirs, and this Chard is an example of what happens when you pair great fruit and great winemaking. This wine is pale yellow in the glass with fine legs indicative of the 14.5% alcohol. I get vanilla, lemon pound cake, and bready aromas on the nose with predominate tropical flavors of pinapple and banana on the palate and secondary notes of lemon. Buttery smooth and with a hint of oak, but fruit is clearly the star here. Another knockout by Scott. Cheers!

Katy Michaud Washington Riesling 2015

This is a beautifully expressive off-dry Riesling. It has a wonderful floral aromatic nose with bountiful ripe peach notes. In the mouth it is crisp and lush at the same time with just a hint of sweetness. Great acidity makes this a very good-friendly wine. I suspect that this will age well but I don't have the patience!
